The History of Slovenian Alpinism

Friko - Peter Mikša: The Historical Review – A monograph about Slovenian Alpinism success in Slovenian Alps and in the mountains all over the World

Alpine Climbing is one of those rare sport activities in Slovenia that has been achieving a world renown for almost 40 years, since exceptional success in the south face of the eight-thousander Makalu in 1975. Since then and the success in the West ridge of Everest four year later Slovenia has been considered amongst the expert public as one of the World’s Alpine climbing superpowers and if we consider the small population of Slovenians, some even consider Slovenia as the leading force amongst the Alpine climbing nations. This success of course could not have been achieved without the older generations of Slovenian alpinists that lead the way for the growth of alpine climbing activities. Achievements by Mira Marko Debelak, Pavla Jesih, Joža Čop 80 years ago and Valentin Stanič even much earlier been considered as one of the best in Europe. Even the very beginnings of Slovenian mountain climbing can be reviewed side by side with those of other Alpine climbing nations. For example, the very first ascent to mount Triglav happened at about the same time as the first ascent to Mont Blanc. There is of course a considerable difference in the altitude, however the technical difficulty of both ascends is considerable. The first ascent to Triglav by the “Four Brave Men“ from Bohinj was therefore more arduous.

Never before has there been a monograph chronologically following the rise of the Slovenian alpinism. It is for this very reason that we inform you, about a release of book Zgodovina slovenskega alpinzma.

The author’s Peter Mikša, Ph.D. and Urban Golob, M.Sc. are writing about the story of the Slovenian alpinism through chronological overview. The book has many strongpoints: it was written by a historian and sociologist, the information presented derives from a new found historical documentation as is written as an easy read full of anecdotes, but at the same time historically accurate. It is a modern book on 240 pages and with approx. 239 photographs many published exclusively.

The authors follow the development of alpinism as a sports from the first documented ascents in Slovene mountains in the 18th Century, up to a daring ascents of today’s generations across the world. Monograph separately presents 37 important individuals, “the Pillars of Slovenian alpinism”, and a text about the history of ascents to the North face of mount Triglav – the symbol of Slovenian alpinism as well as a National Symbol.

All in all, the book brings a collected history of Slovenian Alpinism with its most important achievements, ascents, expeditions into foreign mountains and other events and occurrences.
